7. Regular and systematic researchThere is nosystematic orreliable dataor tools thatmeasure volunteering.Thislack of researchdata proves aconstant barriernot only to thedevelopmentand recognitionof volunteeringbut also insetting strategictargets for itssustainabilityand long-termdevelopment.Unfortunately research on volunteering or the voluntary sector is scarce and random. In thelong social history of Cyprus, the ‘persona,’ contribution, underpinning ideologies, values andhistorical trajectory of an important organisational welfare provider, the voluntary sector, hasnot, unlike in other countries, been the subject of any substantial empirical and theoreticalexploration 36 . There is no regular or systematic research on volunteering, the numbers ofvolunteers, the percentage share of volunteering in the total population and its contribution ineconomy2 37 , Cypriot society, or impact in meeting the national policy targets. Similarly, thereis no systematic or reliable data or tools that measure volunteering. This lack of research dataproves a constant barrier not only to the development and recognition of volunteering but alsoin setting strategic targets for its sustainability and long-term development.8. Ethics and quality standardsfor volunteeringThere are a number of tools to safeguard ethics and quality standards for volunteering in Cyprus.A few voluntary organisations/NGOs have developed their own ethics and quality standardsboth for their programmes/services as well as volunteer contact and engagement in their areaof activity and competence. At a national level, ethical standards in relation to fund-raisingand volunteer management have also been developed. Also specific initiatives in relation tovolunteering administration and management have been developed for the coordinators ofvolunteers, in an effort to safeguard best practice and standards during volunteer contact. Theseinitiatives, mainly implemented by the national coordinating bodies and Volunteer Centres, have been disseminated through special handbooks/guidebooks and training seminars.Quality procedures have been recently revised by these bodies after the newly introducedVolunteering Portal which offers a back office/logistical software system to volunteeradministrators. This new back office software improves volunteer management and conductbased on a common set of procedures in relation to data administration, monitoring ofvolunteering activity and engagement and evaluation of the volunteer service. All of theseinitiatives are overseen by the Pancyprian and the District Volunteerism Coordinative Councilsand the Volunteer Centres in each district.9. Awareness of volunteeringopportunitiesVarious innovative public awareness campaigns on volunteering and volunteer opportunitiestake place in Cyprus such as TV spots, dissemination of leaflets and newsletters, campaignsin public spaces, promotional activities, awareness raising digital games and media tools.
