Appendix E: MOSS data for roadsData for the construction of roads and associated structures are often provided in the form of MOSS data strings. Forlong sections, points on the string are given coordinates (x, y and z), chainage, whole circle bearing of the line at thatpoint and radius of vertical curvature. Each longitudinal string is given a reference code. For cross sections at agiven chainage, points are defined in terms of their coordinates (x, y and z), an offset distance, usually from thecentre-line, and a reference to the codes of the longitudinal strings.In common with all computer software based design and build packages, formats and protocols, MOSS is subject tochange and improvement. Indeed, MOSS is not the only format and the setting-out engineer is encouraged to keepabreast of developments.Dated examples of data for longitudinal and cross sections are given below and opposite.
