Roads: cuttingsSetting-out edge pegsTo set out embankments, the site engineer should follow a similar procedure as for embankments, calculating levelson the slope line at intervals from the centre-line. The point on the embankment where the slope line intersects theground line is marked with an edge peg.Setting up batter rails set offset level peg at ca. 1.5 m for edge of cutting drive two profile stakes 1 m and 2 m from edge peg, while checking each is vertical. Referring to thediagram opposite, a taped distance may be required from point B to the top of slope line calculate and mark levels of points A and B for a suitable traveller length and fix batter rail if cutting is more than 5 m deep, set up batter rails on the slope of the cutting at depth intervals of 5 m asthe cut proceeds record chainage and distance down slope on the batter rail set up ranging rods on the centre-line to guide plant provide details of batter rails and traveller lengths on a Site Information Sheet.Controlling the work (cuttings and embankments)The site engineer should: check batter boards, profiles and travellers regularly reset ranging rods on centre-line as cut or fill proceeds regularly check width of cut or fill either side of centre-line when a cut is an agreed amount above formation level (typically 300 mm) set up standard road worksprofiles to control final trimming and road construction when an embankment is nearly complete, set temporary profiles (allowing for settlement and trimming toformation level) when agreed by supervising authority, set final profiles for trimming to formation and pavementconstruction check the final formation level.Note: In deep cuttings, the ground may heave due to removal of overburden.
