Roads: general proceduresProving the surveyFor major road schemes, the route survey and establishment of the road centre-line may be carried out by specialistsurveyors. In this case, it should be necessary only to ensure that all the primary lines and levels have beenestablished and that existing features agree with those indicated on the drawings. For other road works, it is essential to prove the survey against the drawings before starting any setting-out: prove main setting-out stations (see Appendix D: Road layout: traditional method Proving setting-outstations) check, or establish, and agree primary and temporary bench marks establish intersection points on curves measure intersection angles measure tangent straights and chainages check position and coordinates of intersection and tangent points by reference to main setting-out stations check chainages at natural features, eg hedges and the relative positions of other features check existing ground levels along centre-line at intervals (use a suitable grid for wide roads or on steepside slopes) check if any existing feature or temporary works may obstruct the setting-out process.Dealing with discrepanciesDiscrepancies typically affect: road lengths intersection angles/design curves existing ground levels. To minimise delay: double check that there is a discrepancy report the discrepancy and put forward proposed solution(s) agree action with supervising authority.Note: Corrections to take account of discrepancies frequently require significant changes to land-take, gradients,cross-falls and drainage details.Checking computer printout/filesIf computer-derived setting-out information is provided, check that the changes in coordinates appear logical and thatthe ends of the section of road tie in with known features.
