Roads: earthworks and drainageExisting ground levelsBefore site topsoil stripping starts: set up profiles at predetermined intervals record existing ground levels at each cross-section check recorded levels against those on drawings agree recorded levels with the supervising authority.Note: Recording existing ground levels can be combined with setting-up profiles.Spoil heapsThe site engineer should:set out the plan position of the spoil heap site with 2 m stakes painted whiteprovide plan and profile of each spoil heap on an information sheet for the relevant foreman/ganger.Haulage routesThe site engineer should:mark all haulage routes with direction boards that can be easily seen by the plant drivers, taking intoaccount which public roads may not be usedset lines and levels for routes that have to be constructed with fill to take heavy traffic.Shoulder drainageTo control the levels of ditches and drains in shoulders: set up profiles as for sewers provide profile and traveller details on a Site Information Sheet for foreman/ganger.Formation drainsFormation drains may be required under the road. The accuracy needed in positioning these drains is usually notgreat, and most of the setting-out can be left to the foreman/ganger.The site engineer should: provide foreman/ganger with drain layout on Site Information Sheet establish pegs at suitable heights above drain levels make spot checks on line and level before backfilling.Note: The ganger can transfer levels from peg to bottom of trench by means of levelling board and spirit level.CIRIA C70995
