Buildings and structures: locationBuildings and structures on same siteWhere a project comprises several buildings or structures on the same site, the site engineer must ensure thatindividual units relate to each other so that the whole site is laid out in accordance with the site drawings. This isparticularly important when pipe works or services connect one with another. It is vital that structures are set out tothe tolerances specified. For a small site, a simple system of baselines and offsets can be used as shown in the diagram for a sewagedisposal works opposite. Two baselines at right angles are sufficient in this case.Large siteA large site with a number of related structures poses additional problems that are mainly organisational. The siteengineer may be one of a team, each engineer being responsible for the setting-out and control of a structure or partof a structure. Under these circumstances, it is essential for one engineer to coordinate the overall setting-out activity. On a large site, there is no substitute for a grid of the whole site with a series of reference stations established roundthe site so that every part of a structure can be defined by coordinates and/or bearings and distances from thestations. Each site engineer should: have a layout drawing of the whole site, showing the related structures, grid lines and main setting-outstations prove the main setting-out stations to be used check the setting-out by reference to structures or points already set out on adjacent sectors of the site liaise closely with the other site engineers for adjacent sections where structures are to be set out by directreference to one another, both for location and level report immediately any apparent discrepancies in the site grid or between adjacent sections and resolvethe conflicts.CIRIA C70967
