Adam J. Sorkin is a prize-winning translator of contemporaryRomanian literature. In 2011, he published Liliana Ursu’s APath to the Sea, Ioan Flora’s Medea and Her War Machines,Ion Mureșan’s The Book of Winter and Other Poems, and TheVanishing Point That Whistles: An Anthology of ContemporaryRomanian Poetry (Talisman House), all with co-translators.In 2012, he is publishing Mouths Dry with Hatred by DanSociu and The Flying Head by Ioan Flora. Sorkin is DistinguishedProfessor of English at Penn State Brandywine.Mark Statman’s recent books are Tourist at a Miracle (HangingLoose), poetry, the translation Black Tulips: The SelectedPoems of José María Hinojosa (University of New Orleans Press)and, with Pablo Medina, Lorca’s Poet in New York (Grove).He is associate professor of Literary Studies at Eugene LangCollege.nonprofits. He currently serves as executive director of theCenter for the Art of Translation.Susan Thorne is a German-to-English translator who hastranslated travel literature by Jurek Becker, Wolfgang Koeppen,and others for the city-pick series of Oxygen Press. Sheis also a consultant in interpretation and translation of documentsin Old German Script.Diana Thow holds an MFA in literary translation from theUniversity of Iowa, and has published her translations inCarte Italiane, The Iowa Review, Thermos, Or, and elsewhere.She is currently working on a PhD in Comparative Literatureat UC Berkeley.participants (cont.)Kaija Straumanis is a graduate of the MA program in LiteraryTranslation at the University of Rochester, and is theEditorial Director of Open Letter Press. She translates fromboth Latvian and German, and her translation of Inga Ābele’sHigh Tide will be published in the fall of 2013.Stoyan Tchoukanov “Tchouki” was born in Sofia, Bulgaria,in 1970. In 1996, he earned his MFA at the National Academyof Fine Arts in Sofia. Since 1993, he has had forty-twosolo exhibitions throughout Europe and the USA and morethan eighty group exhibitions on four continents. From 2002to the present, he works for Cross-Cultural Communications,New York, USA, illustrating and/or designing booksby Argentine, Cajun, Chicano, Korean, Norwegian, Persian,Russian, Welsh, and American writers, including PulitzerPrize winners, Stanley Kunitz, Henry Taylor, and YusefKomunyakaa. Tchouki is currently working in the fields ofpainting, printing, murals, and book design.Jordan Stump is a professor of French at the University ofNebraska-Lincoln. He has translated some 20 works of(mostly) contemporary French fiction, including novels byEric Chevillard, Antoine Volodine, Jean Ricardou, MarieRedonnet, and Jean-Philippe Toussaint. His translation ofClaude Simon’s Le Jardin des Plantes was awarded the French-American Foundation’s annual translation prize in 2001. Hisforthcoming translations include Marie NDiaye’s All MyFriends, to be published by Two Lines Press, and three storiesfor a volume of Balzac’s shorter fiction to be published byNew York Review Books. He is also the author of Namingand Unnaming, on Raymond Queneau, and of another book,entitled The Other Book.Armed with degrees in Spanish and Romance Linguistics,Brent Sverdloff has worked as a Spanish instructor, archivistat The Getty Center and Harvard, and marketing andcommunications director at other arts and education-basedCarolyn L. Tipton teaches at the University of California,Berkeley. Awards for her poems and translations include fellowshipsfrom the National Endowment for the Humanitiesand the National Endowment for the Arts. Her first book, ToPainting: Poems by Rafael Alberti, won the American LiteraryTranslators Association National Translation Award.Joanna Trzeciak is associate professor of Translation Studiesat Kent State. Her translations have appeared in the NewYorker, TLS, Harpers, The Atlantic, and VQR. Miracle Fair:Selected Poems of Wisława Szymborska (W.W. Norton) wasawarded the Heldt Translation Prize. Sobbing Superpower:Selected Poems of Tadeusz Różewicz (W. W. Norton) wasshortlisted for the 2012 Griffin Poetry Prize.Russell Scott Valentino has published eight books, numerousessays and articles, and a variety of translations of fiction,nonfiction, and poetry from Italian, Croatian, and Russian.He is the publisher of Autumn Hill Books and Editor-inchiefat The Iowa Review. He teaches in the University ofIowa’s Translation Workshop.Claire Van Winkle received her bachelor’s degree from NewYork University and is currently pursuing an MFA in PoetryWriting and Literary Translation at Queens College of theCity University of New York. She is also at present workingwith the New York State Psychiatric Institute to explorethe writing workshop as an element of therapy. Her recentcreative work includes the translation of Jean Blanquet’s DieuEst Un Arbre Peuplé De Chats. Claire Van Winkle is a poetryeditor for the Ozone Park Journal.Ben Van Wyke is an assistant professor of Spanish andTranslation Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University,Indianapolis. His research interests include the intersection oftranslation, metaphor and contemporary philosophy, as wellas translation in the Latin American context.47
