Preface 11The response was almost unanimous: I was told thatpeople were curious about the UFO phenomenon. I realizedthat I was, too. Although I had been aware and curious aboutUFO stories since I was a young man in the 1950s, I was nofurther along than anyone else in learning the truth of thematter. I determined that I would research and write aboutthe topic. As I began to establish, and reestablish, contacts withinthe UFO research community, I was made aware of a speechpresented by a military intelligence officer at a public conferencein Atlanta in early 1992 (the Treat IV Conference). Ina public speech, then-Army Captain Ed Dames spoke aboutUFOs, detailing in no uncertain terms what they were, wherethey came from, and where they were going. His matter-of-fact tone intrigued me, for here was nostarry-eyed New Age fanatic, but a decorated military intelligenceofficer. Furthermore, Dames was no loose cannon.During his talk, he was flanked by Col. John Alexander, aleading luminary in military nonlethal weapons researchwho moved freely between both military and intelligenceprograms, and Maj. Gen. Albert Stubblebine, former commanderof the Army’s Intelligence and Security Command.Dames told his audience about the development of remoteviewing, which he described as “this profound tool.” Healso spoke of flying “transport vehicles” used to “transport atype of resource, usually from Mars to Earth, sometimesthrough time.” He spoke of giant inhabited underground cavernson Earth and hibernating Martians on Mars, even “transcendental”energy beings who could access our veryminds.
