I wastold by the new book editor that, though she neither understoodnor agreed with the course being taken, she was powerlessto prevent the cancellation.I was assured that the only reason for the cancellationwas the possibility of legal action by Dames, yet when I explainedthat he was only one of many sources and could bedeleted without affecting the book, I was told it would be canceledanyway.Everyone involved with the book came to believe that thecancellation had been ordered by someone with great authority,perhaps within the government. Subsequent eventsonly substantiated this belief.The book was canceled in late July 1995, despite substantialorders from booksellers. On August 27, the story of RVbroke in a London newspaper. The story, entitled “Tinker, Tailor,Soldier, Psi,” was written by <strong>Jim</strong> Schnabel, who earlier thatyear had received a copy of my manuscript from Dames.Schnabel went on to publish a book on RV in 1997, which includedmuch detail from insider sources.By early September, the CIA was involved in a review ofremote viewing by Ray Hyman and Jessica Utts. Consideringthat Hyman, a luminary of the Committee for the ScientificInvestigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), was biasedagainst ESP to begin with, coupled with the fact that thereview concentrated only on the weakest of the RV work, theoutcome was never in doubt.Their finished report, dated September 29, 1995, was afascinating mixture of both support for and condemnation of
