Sciences Cutting Edge 75For his part, Honorton focused on 28 studies comprising835 Ganzfeld sessions in 10 different laboratories. Significantresults were obtained in 43 percent of these studies. “Theodds against that result arising by chance are greater thanone billion to one,” reported Broughton. 6After further rounds of attack and counterattack acrossthe meta-analysis battlefield by both Hyman and Honortonand their associates, both sides drew closer together. In asurprising “Joint Communique,” both Hyman and Honortonagreed that the effects demonstrated in the Ganzfeld database“cannot reasonably be explained by selective reportingor multiple analyses.” 7 In other words, there weresignificant effects in the studies. But, of course, neitherHyman nor Honorton could agree on what caused these effects.Interestingly enough, it was Hyman who, in 1995, wasselected by the CIA to coproduce a dismissive report onremote viewing.British mathematician and psi skeptic Christopher Scottwas prompted to term Honorton’s presentation “the most convincingargument for the existence of ESP that I have yet encountered,”and even meta-analysis pioneer Rosenthalindicated he felt the Ganzfeld studies had demonstrated someeffect. 8After reviewing the Ganzfeld debate issue, Broughton,a former president of the International ParapsychologicalAssociation, wrote:Meta-analysis has shown that these impressiveESP results are consistent across experiments and experimenters. They are not just statistical flukes—orpossibly suspicious results—associated with one
