72<strong>PSI</strong> <strong>Spies</strong>Despite the impressive historical record and the evergrowingbody of scientific evidence for the existence ofpsychic phenomena, the battle between believers andskeptics continues unabated. However, two recent developmentsin the field of parapsychology may presenta definitive answer to the question of the reality of psychicabilities. These are the Ganzfeld Technique andmeta-analysis.Ganzfeld, from the German for “whole field,” refers to ESPexperiments in which the human subject is placed in a mildstate of sensory deprivation so as to exclude any possibilitythat outside influences may be affecting psychic testing. Insome cases light, sound, and color are used to block thesubject’s normal senses and create a soothing environmentwith nothing to distract the subject.This type of experiment first began in the early 1960s atthe Maimonides Dream Laboratory, an adjunct of theMaimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Thedream studies produced impressive results. In one 1970 test,a young English psychic named Malcolm Bessent describedhis prophetic dream by describing various types of birds. “Ijust have a feeling the next target material will be aboutbirds,” Bessent told the experimenters.The next day, a lab member who had not been in contactwith Bessent randomly selected the next dream target:a slide show with a soundtrack devoted to a variety ofbirds.
