The Past is Prologue 63known as psychokinesis (PK). Rhine’s curiosity was piquedand he promptly turned his statistical procedures todice-tossing.Wilson wrote, “Rhine’s experiments showed the gamblerwas correct; he could, to some extent, influence the dice toturn up sixes. Since then, there have been thousands of similarexperiments, and the evidence for PK is regarded asoverwhelming.” 39Broughton noted that, although the man was able to produceresults that supported his claim, “even more interestingfor Rhine was that some of his ESP subjects were similarlyable to influence the fall of dice. Even Rhine himself had somesuccess at it.” 40From 1927 until J.B. Rhine’s death in 1970, the husbandand wife team produced a prodigious amount of scientificpapers demonstrating the existence of both ESP and PK. Thisexciting research into psychic phenomena was presented indry publications with titles such as “Experiments Bearing onthe Precognition Hypothesis: Pre-shuffling Card Calling” and“A Review of the Pearce-Pratt Distance Series of ESP Tests.”The Rhines did acquire their fair share of critics. Yetthrough the years they quietly, yet steadfastly, answered everycriticism that came up. In 1940, the Rhines, along with otherparapsychologists, produced a book entitled Extra-SensoryPerception After Sixty Years, a compendium of psychical researchsince the founding of the SPR in 1882. The researchpresented in this book was so careful and scientific that thebook became assigned reading for introductory psychologyclasses at Harvard for the 1940–41 academic year. 41
