The Past is Prologue 49In one study of native North American spirituality, thestory was repeated of a Penobscot Indian who went on a huntingtrip with his wife, son, and daughter-in-law. The womenstayed behind at a hunting camp while the men went off,promising to return within three days.After four or five days, the women became anxious aboutthe men’s safety. One night the Penobscot wife told thedaughter-in-law that she was going to sleep and woulddream about the men. After a long time, during which theyounger woman believed she saw a “ball of fire” exit and enterthe wife’s body, the wife finally stirred and said, “Don’tworry, they will be back tomorrow. They had good luck andare bringing lots of game. I just saw them sitting by their fireeating supper.” The next day the hunters returned loadedwith an abundance of game. 8There are even bits of information relating to Indian lorethat suggest that their psychic travels may have penetratedbeyond this world.In the early 20th century an Osage, Playful Calf, toldanthropologist Francis La Flesche about his studies with tribalelders, called No-ho-zhi-ga.
