But theproblem was knowing when the results were accurate versuswhen they were inaccurate, and there wasn’t a very good filteringmechanism.”The mental clutter problem is compounded in remoteviewing by analytical overlay (AOL), the conscious subjectiveinterpretation of the psychic signal. AOL is usually wrong, especially in the early stages of a person’s remote viewingexperience, although it often will possess valid insights of thetarget. For example, a lighthouse may produce an AOL of“factory chimney” because of its tall cylindrical shape.AOL is relatively easy to identify in a RV session becausethere is usually a comparison involved. According to Riley, theviewer will say, “It looks like...” or “This reminds me of...” and soforth. It is said that when a remote viewer gets a clear, sharp, and motionless image of a site—a mental photograph ofsorts—this is always AOL.Psi Spies monitors looked for little things to tip them offthat AOL was involved in the remote viewing sessions. Theywatched for certain inflections in the voice or informationbeing delivered in the form of a question. They particularlywatched for deviations from the structure.“The first few years I was in the unit, I was convinced thatall the problems of CRV [Controlled Remote Viewing] wouldgo away if only we could master the tendency to get AOL, “recalled Lyn Buchanan. “I worked on the problem all that timebut nothing seemed to succeed.”
