War in the Ether 183Despite the “plausibility” of the remote viewing phenomenon, credibility remained elusive for the Psi Spies. Not thatthe other intelligence services weren’t quick to make use oftheir information—it was just that no one wanted to acknowledgehow this information was obtained. The Psi Spies unit became a military mistress: Everyonewanted to court them for their information, but no one wantedto be associated with them. It became apparent that, no matterwhat information was obtained through remote viewingfor the military, they would never be taken seriously. At thispoint, Riley and Morehouse each said, several of the Psi Spiesagreed to go under the table. The Psi Spies commanders wanted to keep all informationclose to their chest, because they thought it was a politicalhot potato. They were afraid of being censured orostracized. Therefore, much of the information gainedthrough remote viewing was not being disseminated to otheragencies. To bypass this roadblock, some unit members simplycalled up people they knew in other agencies and passedalong information in the form of conversation. Morehousesaid that these recipients knew about the Psi Spies unit andwould consider the information accordingly, sometimes evenutilizing it for their own missions. The year 1988 proved to be a watershed for the Psi Spiesunit: That year, as the Psi Spies continued to run operationsagainst their Soviet extrasensor counterparts, remote viewingcame under scathing attack in a National Academy ofSciences report, and the unit came under the scrutiny ofSecretary of Defense Frank Carlucci.
