Thisallowed unit members to concentrate on their work. It wasduring his tenure that the Psi <strong>Spies</strong> took on one of their mostdifficult tasks: helping the CIA to identify a “mole,” a counterintelligenceagent inside the agency. “We could not havesuccessfully accomplished this mission without absolutemilitary teamwork,” recalled Morehouse. “We were a militaryteam, like a regular Army unit. There were no primadonnas.” Once the unit was taken from INSCOM and placedunder the DIA, things went awry, according to veteran Psi<strong>Spies</strong>.The DIA’s primary responsibility was for intelligenceanalysis and reporting, not intelligence collectionor operations. No charter existed allowing DIA to conductintelligence operations; the Psi <strong>Spies</strong> could not beplaced legitimately on DIA books. Because they were connectedwith the DIA funding of psi research, the unit becamethe illegitimate child of the Scientific and Technical IntelligenceDirectorate under Dr. Jack Verona.Verona, unlike Gen.
