144PSI Spiesit was what happened afterwards....I was playingaround and found that I could put a rock on a metal plateand use my mind to push the rock through the plate. Ithought that was pretty neat. So I showed this to a girlfriend of mine. Well, it turned out that she was thedaughter of a Seventh Day Adventist minister. Thatnight there was a knock on the door and these peoplecame in and grabbed me. They put their hands on myhead and were screaming, saying I was “of the devil.”It scared the water out of me.Buchanan’s father worked for a railroad and his familymoved around quite a lot. “I attended 11 high schools,”Buchanan recalled. Young Buchanan moved with his familyfrom Texas to California and back. He graduated from SanJacinto High School in Houston. After working at a variety of jobs, Buchanan joined theArmy, where he was trained in computer technology. “Duringthe 1960s I worked on computer systems for the Nike Ajaxand Hercules missiles,” he said. After three years, Buchanan left the Army and earnedan undergraduate degree from Lon Morris College inJacksonville, Texas. He went on to earn a master’s degreein psycho-linguistics from Stephen F. Austin University inNacogdoches, Texas. He recalled one incident that always reminds him of howfar computer technology has come in recent years: “Oncewhen I was looking for a job, I went to this little bitty companycalled CDC just south of Houston. This guy showed me ahuge room full of big computers and told me that one daywe’d have a computer as small as his desk. Of course, now wehave computers you can hold in your hand.”
