4Setting up FactoryTalk DirectoryThis chapter describes:• what FactoryTalk® Directory is.• using FactoryTalk Directory in a networked system.• specifying the location of FactoryTalk Directory.• restoring FactoryTalk Directory when deploying an application.• what happens if FactoryTalk Directory is unavailable at run time.About FactoryTalk DirectoryFactoryTalk Directory software works like a telephone directory, or electronic addressbook, allowing parts of an application to find each other on a computer, or on the network.FactoryTalk-enabled applications like <strong>RSView</strong> use one of two types of FactoryTalkDirectory:• FactoryTalk Local Directory (also called Local Directory) manages applicationsconfined to a single computer, for example, <strong>RSView</strong> <strong>Supervisory</strong> <strong>Edition</strong> stand-aloneapplications.• FactoryTalk Network Directory (also called Network Directory) managesapplications that can consist of multiple clients and servers on separate computersconnected over a network, for example, <strong>RSView</strong> <strong>Supervisory</strong> <strong>Edition</strong> distributedapplications.Your set up the directory (or directories) you need after installing the FactoryTalkAutomation Platform .
