152 <strong>DISCOURSES</strong>"The Master is eating;" when he sleeps, he thinks, "The Master issleeping;" when he drives a car, he thinks, "The Master is drivingthe car;" even when he may happen to do something wrong, hethinks, "The Master is doing this." Thus he completely relinquishesall agency for his action, and all that is done by him is brought intodirect reference to the Master. This automatically and necessarilyinvolves and entails determination of each action in the light of thespiritual ideal as seen in the Master.The four forms of personal meditation on the Masterrepresent the four main ascending stages: (i) perceiving thespiritual ideal in the Master, (ii) concentrating upon the Master asFour forms of personalmeditation representfour ascendingstagesan embodiment of the spiritual ideal, (iii)loving the Master as a manifestation of thespiritual ideal, and (iv) expressing thespiritual ideal, perceived in the Master, inone's own life. Personal meditation on theMaster, in its different forms, ultimately contributes towards therelease of creative life of spiritual fulfillment. Meditation on theMaster is a meditation on the living ideal and not on the bareconception of perfection. Therefore it generates that dynamicpower which eventually enables the aspirant to bridge over the gulfbetween theory and practice, and unify the spiritual ideal witheveryday activity in his own life. To live a life inspired andillumined by the spiritual ideal, as embodied in the Master, is theculmination of all the forms of personal meditation.
