THE TYPES OF MEDITATION: V<strong>II</strong>I 171The entire advance, from the very beginning, consists ingradually curtailing and transcending the working of the individualmind. The mind is functioning even in the body-state and in theMind veils the Truthenergy-state, but in the body-state the mindthinks in terms of the body, in the energystateit thinks in terms of energy, while in the mind-state it thinks inits own terms. However, even when the mind thinks in its ownterms, it does not attain knowledge and realisation of the Infinite,because it becomes its own veil between thought and the Truth.Though the mind may be unencumbered by the life of the body orthe life of energy, it is still limited by separative consciousness. Itmight be compared to a mirror which is covered with dust. Themind has, therefore, to be completely merged and dissolved in theInfinite before it is possible to experience the God-state of SahajSamadhi. Form is solidified energy; energy is an expression ofmind; mind is the covered mirror of Eternity; and Eternity is Truthwhich has thrown off the mask of mind.To discard the limiting mind is no easy thing. The chiefdifficulty is that the mind has to be annihilated through the minditself. Intense longing for union with the Infinite Reality as well asCrossing of mindrequires longing andpatienceinfinite patience are indispensable in theprocess of crossing the mind. One Mastertold his disciple that in order to attain thehighest state he had to be thrown, boundhand and foot to a plank, into a river, where he must keep hisgarments dry. The disciple could not understand the inner meaningof this injunction. He wandered until he encountered another saintand asked him the meaning of the injunction given by the Master.The saint explained that in order to attain God, he had to long
