THE TYPES OF MEDITATION: VII 167is not self-sustained but is dependent upon the object to which themind directs itself. The Sahaj Samadhi of the Siddha is self-sustained and is inno way dependent upon any object of the mind. Trance-meditationis more like the stupor of intoxicating drugs. The intoxication ofSahaj Samadhi selfsustainedthe drug lasts only as long as the effect ofthe drug lasts. So the trance continues toexist as long as the mind is under the swayof the object by which it is sustained. Sahaj Samadhi which is freefrom the domination of the object is a state of full wakefulness inwhich there is no ebb and flow, waxing or waning, but only thesteadiness of true perception. The different forms of general and specialised meditationresorted to by the aspirant are useful and valuable within their ownlimits. They must not be regarded as having the same value for allThose in Sahaj Samadhiare proper objectsfor meditationor as being equally necessary to all. Theyare among the ways which lead the aspiranttowards his divine destination. Forthe few who are in an advanced spiritualstate, most of the ordinary forms of meditation are unnecessary. For those who are in direct contact with a God-realised Master, many of the special forms of meditation are often unnecessary. It isenough for them to be under the guidance of the Master and to lovehim. And those rare beings who have attained Self-realisation andare always in the state of Sahaj Samadhi, not only do not need anyforms of meditation, but they themselves become objects ofmeditation for the aspirants; for they are then able to give their besthelp to those who meditate upon them.
