True freedom andspontaneity existonly in Sahaj SamadhiTHE TYPES OF MEDITATION: VII 163though there may seem to be a superficialresemblance between the Sahaj Samadhiof the Siddha and the pre-spiritualmeditations of the worldly man, thisresemblance really hides the important difference between illusoryspontaneity and true spontaneity, bondage and freedom, fleetingpleasure and abiding happiness. In the pre-spiritual meditations themovement of the mind is under unconscious compulsion, and inSahaj Samadhi mental activity is released under conscious andunfettered initiative. The different forms of meditation which characterise thelife of the spiritual aspirant, stand midway between the pre-spiritualmeditations of the worldly man and the final Sahaj Samadhi of theMeditation a part ofaspirant’s struggletowards emancipationSiddha. They also constitute the linkbetween them. When man's primaryacquiescence in sanskaric interests isprofoundly disturbed by setback, defeat andsuffering, or is shaken by a spark ofspiritual understanding, he becomes conscious of his bondage andthe falseness of his perceptions. All the different forms ofmeditation which are then resorted to by the aspirant arise asparts of his struggle towards emancipation from the bondage of thedeceptive desires of the worldly man. The forms of meditationwhich are spiritually important begin when a person has become anaspirant or Sadhaka. The meditation of the aspirant in all its forms is deliberate,in the sense that it is experienced as counteracting instinctive orother tendencies inherent in the mind. The aspirant adopts differentMeditation involveseffortforms of meditation as a means to an end,i.e., because he looks upon them as avenuesto the Truth.
