94 DISCOURSESFeet of the Mastergo through everything—good and bad,beautiful and ugly, clean and dirty, yet theyremain above everything. Spiritually the feet of the Master areabove everything in the universe, which is like dust to them. Whenpeople come to a Perfect Master and touch his feet with theirhands, they lay the burden of their sanskaras on him. He collectsthe sanskaras from all over the universe, just as an ordinaryperson, in walking, collects dust on his feet. There is a hoarycustom that after the aspirant has the darshana of the Master andfalls at his feet, he washes the Master's feet with milk and honeyand places a coconut near them as his offering. Honey representsred sanskaras, milk represents white sanskaras and the coconutrepresents the mind. Thus this convention which has becomeestablished in some areas in connection with greeting the Masters,really symbolises throwing the burden of all sanskaras on theMaster and surrendering the mind to him. Adoption of this innerattitude constitutes the most critical and important step which theaspirant must take in order to get initiated on the Path.Once the aspirant has the bliss of the darshana of a Master,that sight gets carved on his mind, and even when he is unable toestablish frequent personal contact, his mind turns to the MasterMental contactagain and again in an effort to understand Hissignificance. This process of establishing mentalcontact with the Master is essentially different from merelyimaginative revival of past incidents. In the ordinary play ofimagination, the recall of past incidents is not necessarily animatedby a definite purpose, whereas in establishing mental contact thereis a definite purpose.
