THE NATURE OF THE EGO AND ITS TERMINATION: <strong>II</strong>I 79its final disappearance.The superiority and inferiority complexes have to bebrought into intelligent relation with each other if they are tocounteract each other. This requires a psychic situation in which,Adjustment to theMaster involves dissolutionof complexesthrough mutualtensionfor the time being, both will be allowed tohave their play at one and the same time,without requiring the repression of the onein order to secure the expression of theother. When the soul enters into a dynamicand vital relation with the Master, thecomplexes concerned with the senses of inferiority and superiorityare both brought into play and they are so intelligentlyaccommodated that they counteract each other. The disciple feelsthat he is nothing in himself, but in and through the Master he isenlivened by the prospect of being everything. Thus at one strokethe two complexes are brought into mutual tension, and tend toannihilate each other in the attempt which the disciple makes toadjust himself to the Master. With the dissolution of these oppositecomplexes there comes a breaking down of the separative barriersof the ego in all its forms. With the breaking down of the barriers -of separation there arises divine love. With the arising of divinelove the separate feeling of the "I," as distinguished from "you," isswallowed up in the sense of their unity.For a car to move towards its destination a driver isnecessary. But this driver may be susceptible to strong attachmentsfor things that he encounters on the way, and he might not onlyAnalogy of driverhalt at intervening places for an indefinitetime, but also get lost in the wayside in pursuitof things that have only temporary charm. In that case he mightkeep the car moving all the time
