THE TYPES OF MEDITATION: V<strong>II</strong>I 169which is described by Christ in the words, "I and my Father areone." Many have written about this highest state of consciousness,but it remains essentially indescribable. It cannot be expressed inwords, and therefore it cannot be adequately explained. But thoughit can never be explained by one person to another, it can beexperienced by everyone for himself. This highest state of theSiddha is called Sahaj Samadhi.To dwell in Sahaj Samadhi is to experience the God-statein which the soul knows itself to be God, because it has shed allthe limiting factors which had hitherto contributed towards falseLife of the bodyself-knowledge. The God-state of theSiddha stands out in clear contrast withthe body-state of the worldly man. The worldly man takes himselfto be the body, and dwells in a state which is dominated by thebody and its wants. His consciousness centres on the body. He isconcerned with eating, drinking, sleeping and the satisfaction ofother bodily desires. It is for the body that he lives and seeksfulfillment. His consciousness cannot extend beyond the body; hethinks in terms of the body and cannot think of anything which hasno body or form. The entire sphere of his existence is conprised offorms, and the theatre in which he lives and moves and has hisbeing consists of space.The first step towards the God-state of Sahaj Samadhi istaken when the body-state is transcended. Shedding the body-statemeans entering the sphere of existence which is comprised ofLife of energyenergy. The soul then dwells in a statewhich is no longer dominated by forms orbodies. It is lifted up to the domain of energy. Body or form is asolidification of energy, and to rise from the world of forms to thesphere of energy amounts to an advance towards a more primaryand purer state of being.
