THE WAYS OF THE MASTERS 57at true adjustment with all other forms of the Supreme Self.Through his allegiance to the Master the aspirant gives effect to hisconscious appreciation of the fundamental unity of all theseproblems. From the psychological point of view he is in a positionto tackle them not as separate problems but as aspects of oneproblem. Thus he can arrive at true integration, which is differentfrom a temporary compromise between conflicting claims. In orderto help the disciple to achieve this difficult task the Master has tobecome the nucleus of all the spiritual idealism of the aspirant,because intensive concentration of psychic energy is necessary ifthe aspirant is to break through the many barriers which liebetween him and his goal.The supremacy of claim which the Master has cannot bechallenged or limited even by the spontaneous reverence which thedisciple is bound to feel for Masters other than the one whoImperative claimof the Masterhas accepted him. All Perfect Masters are onein their consciousness and it is absurd toimagine any grades between them. Though oneMaster is not greater than another, the disciple must, for his ownpurposes, place the claim of his own Master over and above theclaims of other Masters until he transcends the domain of dualityand realises the unity of all life. Psychic energy would bedissipated unless there arose a supremely imperative claim amongthe many conflicting claims of life. Exclusive concentration uponone Master is therefore usually indispensable for the gathering upof the dispersed psychic energy of the disciple. In very rare cases,owing to special circumstances, the Masters themselves mightdecide to share the spiritual work in relation to a particulardisciple. There are, therefore, exceptional cases of disciples whohave had to affiliate themselves to two or more Masters. This is anexception rather than the
58 <strong>DISCOURSES</strong>rule, and where there are more Masters than one, they arrange thedistribution of their work so carefully that they do not set up anyconflict of claims.
