Course DescriptionsEDUC670 • Assessment Practicum(SPEG)2 creditsPracticum is designed to enable learners to develop competence in assessingstudents to determine eligibility for special education and specific educationalneeds. Emphasis is on developing a thorough knowledge of and proficiency informal assessment, with emphasis on administration and scoring procedures ofthe Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement, in compliance with professionaland ethical standards of assessment. Graded on an S/U basis. Taken concurrentlywith EDUC655. Prerequisites: EDUC605, EDUC610.EDUC675 • Young Adult Literature2 creditsIntroduction to popular and contemporary literature for intermediate and adolescentreaders. Focus is on extensive reading; evaluating the quality of youngadult literature; and instructional strategies for synthesizing young adult literatureinto the language arts curriculum. Learners will be required to read and criticallyreview intermediate and young adult literature in a wide variety of genres andacross a wide span of age groups.EDUC680 • Methods of Teaching 5–12 Mathematics(TEAG)3 creditsFinal preparation for entering the teaching profession. Learners are equipped withsome of the tools necessary for becoming lifelong learners of teaching. Key topicsinclude a variety of instructional methods, class management, and assessmentstrategies; math content in the 5–12 curriculum, including special emphasis onthe NCTM Principles and Standards, Minnesota K–12 Mathematics Framework,and Minnesota Academic Standards; learning theory appropriate to mathematicsteaching strategies; and exploration of tools and technologies for the support andenhancement of classroom instruction.EDUC681 • Methods of Teaching 5–12 Science(TEAG)3 creditsCurrent methods and approaches used in the teaching of science in grades 5–12.Examination of ways to develop and present curriculum with emphasis on content,scientific investigation, inquiry, assessment, and safe laboratory practices.EDUC682 • Methods of Teaching Visual Arts, K–12(TEAG)3 creditsMaterials, methods, and curriculum employed in teaching art at both the elementaryand secondary levels. Historical survey of philosophy of art education andpresent trends. Studio time for exploration and application of media suitable forboth elementary and secondary levels.96
