Course DescriptionsEDUC720 • Autism Spectrum Disorders:Introduction and Overview(CASD, EDUG)993 creditsExamination of autism and Asperger’s syndrome. Information will be accessedregarding theories, research, medical, and legal requirements of autism. Personalviewpoints and ethics from a biblical perspective will be examined regarding educationalapproaches to autism. Introduction to educational criteria, identificationand assessment, teaching strategies, and family issues. Introduction to behaviormanagement: behavior management philosophy, practical strategies, and skillsrelated to children identified with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).EDUC721 • Autism Spectrum Disorders: Communication,Assessment, and Intervention Strategies(CASD, EDUG)3 creditsExamination and communication characteristics and challenges often associatedwith autism spectrum disorders. Current tools and strategies used to assess speech,language, and interaction skills. Ethical and moral issues from a biblical perspectivewill be discussed. Use of assessment results to identify needs and developintervention plans. Creation of an Autism Tool Kit (defined in the assessment section),including techniques and interventions for building receptive and expressivelanguage, as well as social communication skills of children with ASD.EDUC723 • Autism Spectrum Disorders: Identification,Evaluation, Planning, and Consulting(CASD, EDUG)3 creditsFocus is on the process of identification, assessment, and educational planningfor students with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. Using appropriate tools forevaluation of autism spectrum disorders, effective utilization, and reportingresults. Examine and/or design critical elements of consulting in an educationaland family environment specifically for students identified with autism spectrumdisorders.EDUC725 • Autism Spectrum Disorders: Field Experience(CASD, EDUG)1 creditComplete required competencies within an educational setting for students withASD. IEP goals and objectives, assessments, behavior plans, communication strategies,and classroom strategies will be completed and included in a portfolio.EDUC750 • Student Teaching Seminar(TEAG)4 creditsMany of the skills and much of the knowledge introduced in prior courses willbe practiced concurrently in student teaching and this course. Focus is on thedevelopment of reflective professional qualities and instructional and evaluativeskills. Clarifying personal beliefs, enhancing communication skills, adjusting todiverse student needs, and development of effective learning environments aresignificant elements of the course. Taken concurrently with EDUC770.
