SERVICES FOR STUDETS WITH DISABILITIESLocation: Lake Campus/Building 19-BHours: 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. (M-F)Telephone: (504) 286-5335The Services for <strong>Student</strong>s with Disabilities (SSD) addresses the needs ofstudents with documented disability by providing special accommodationsand appropriate services to ensure campus accessibility. The primary purposeof the program is to promote self-advocacy in students with disabilitiesand to provide auxiliary aids in an effort to ensure full participation in all<strong>University</strong> activities and programs. The SSD staff serves as mentors andadvocates for students and are available to faculty and staff for consultation.The following is what you need to know to take advantage of the Servicesfor <strong>Student</strong>s with Disabilities:A disability is a physical or mental impairment that can limit major life activitiesof an individual.• Self-Identification is the first step in requesting accommodations.A student may self-identify by submitting medical documentationto substantiate his or her claim of a disability to the Office of Servicesfor <strong>Student</strong>s with Disabilities (Bldg. 19-B Lake Campus).• Documentation is information obtained from a qualified professionalthat must be specific in academic accommodations relatedto the disability.• All disability documentation is confidential and released onlywith the consent of the student.• Accommodations relate to changing the learning environment ofthe academic requirements so that the student may learn in spiteof fundamental weakness (es).• Accommodations for temporary impairments due to accident,illness, or injury with medical documentation are also provided.• All students with disabilities must adhere to academic and conductpolicies set forth by the <strong>University</strong>.• A complete Policy and Procedures Manual is located in theOffice of Services for <strong>Student</strong>s with Disabilities.• Services for <strong>Student</strong>s with Disabilities encourages students tocontact Louisiana Rehabilitation Services (LRS) for assistancewith tuition, auxiliary aids and/or testing/counseling.• The service plays a major role in making sure the university isknowledgeable about and in compliance with legal requirementsunder Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and theAmerican with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.43
