UIVERSITY POLICIES & PROCEDURESAlcohol and Drug Prevention PolicyAlcoholic Beverage PolicySouthern University at New Orleans acknowledges and adheres to the stateof Louisiana alcohol consumption law. The law clearly states that“individuals under the age of 21 shall not be served alcoholic beverages norwill individuals under the age of 21 be permitted to consume alcoholic beverages.”It is Southern University at New Orleans’ policy that all students are prohibitedfrom the use and sale of alcoholic beverages within the confines of theUniversity and at University sponsored activities. In compliance with Universitypolicy, the following stipulations apply:• The possession of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on Universityproperty and at University sponsored activities.• The possession, sale, and distribution of any alcohol paraphernaliaare prohibited within the confines of the University and onany property belonging to Southern University at New Orleans.• The possession of empty alcoholic beverage containers is prohibitedon University property.• Students who are in violation of this policy are subject to disciplinaryactions, such as expulsion from the University. (SeeCode Offenses in this Handbook)The consumption of alcohol poses serious health and safety concerns. Alcoholabuse causes impaired judgment, incoherence, and health-related problems.Individuals who need or desire treatment for alcohol abuse may seekservices from the Student Development Center located in Building 3 or 19A,Lake Campus. Students may also seek services from University Health Serviceslocated in Building 3 at the Lake Campus.Drug PolicyRecognizing that drug use poses health and safety hazards to employees,students, and the community at large, Southern University at New Orleansconsiders the abuse of drugs to be a very serious matter – one that cannot betolerated in the workplace or classroom. Therefore, it is the policy of theUniversity to maintain a drug-free workplace and an environment conduciveto the learning process.80
In compliance with University policy, the following stipulations apply:• The manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, or useof any illegal drug or abuse of any controlled substance in theworkplace and classroom or other related areas associated withthe learning process, including residential units or other University– sponsored housing is unlawful.• Such actions are prohibited on all University property and atany other locations where employees or students are conductingUniversity business.• The possession of any drug paraphernalia is prohibited on Universityproperty and on property sponsored by the Universityi.e., Residential Life community.• Students who are in violation of this policy are subject to disciplinaryactions, such as expulsion from the University. (SeeCode Offenses in this Handbook)The use of drugs or controlled substances can cause serious health risk andmay lead to death. Students who need or desire treatment of drug abuse mayreceive free counseling services and a referral from the Student DevelopmentCenter located in Building 19-A, Lake Campus. Students may also seek servicesfrom University Health Services located in Building 3, Lake Campus.Class Attendance RegulationsAs indicated on Page 30 of this handbook, a student who is not present whenattendance is checked in a class is considered absent. Tardiness (1 minutelate for class and beyond) Absent (failure to show up at all or arriving in classfifteen minute after the Instructor), unless an excuse is obtained from the instructorat the end of the period. The initiative in obtaining an excuse restswith the student. Instructors who do not show up for class at a minimum, 15minutes after the designated start timeframe should be aware that studentsmay leave (depart) without penalty.Cell Phone UseCell phone use is strictly prohibited inside of an Instructor’s class duringclass time. Cell Phone is required to be in the OFF position during the entireclass timeframe. Students are not allowed to go in and out of the classroomto receive telephone calls. No text messaging is allowed. If a student is expectingan emergency telephone call, it is the student’s responsibility to discussthis matter in advance with the Instructor, and the Instructor may allowthe student to place his or her cell phone on VIBRATE ONLY, in order toreceive the emergency call. There will be zero tolerance for using cell phonesor texting during class timeframes.Using Electronic Device (Cell Phone) to Tape An Instructor’s Lecture.Students are required to discuss and obtain permission from the Instructor inadvance, prior to using any electronic device to record an Instructor’sLecture.81
