The SGA has as its function, the representation of SUNO students in matterspertaining to student welfare, activities, participation in <strong>University</strong> affairs,planning, and administration. The Organization initiates and integrates studentactivities and serves as liaison between the administration and the studentbody.A student loan program is also administered by the SGA. This programgrants financial assistance to students of <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> at <strong>New</strong> <strong>Orleans</strong>in meeting emergencies. Funding for the loan program is generated from studentassessed fees included in each student’s tuition at the time of enrollment.Thus, all students enrolled at the <strong>University</strong> are eligible to participate in theloan program. The loans are processed and serviced by the SGA followingspecific guidelines that are developed by the organization. All SGA loansmust be approved by the Director of <strong>Student</strong> Financial Aid and the ViceChancellor for <strong>Student</strong> Affairs and Enrollment Services.The minimum academic requirements for SGA officers set by the constitutionand/or by policy of the <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> Board of Supervisors are as follows:President of SGA – At the time of election, must have a minimum cumulativegrade point average of 2.5 as verified by the Office of Records, and must be atleast of Sophomore classification (30 hours or more) and must have completeda minimum of two (2 ) semesters at <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> at <strong>New</strong> <strong>Orleans</strong>the semester prior to the semester in which the election is held. He orshe must also have at least one year of prior service to the <strong>University</strong>., i.e.,SGA or any other student organization and be able to serve his or her full term(one year) to qualify for this position.Vice Presidents of SGA – At the time of election, must have at least a 2.5cumulative grade point average as verified by the Office of Records, must beat least of Sophomore classification (30 hours or more) and must have completeda minimum of two semesters at <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> at <strong>Orleans</strong> prior tothe semester in which the election is held. He or she must also have at leastone year of prior service to the <strong>University</strong>, i.e., SGA or any other student organizationand be able to serve his/her full term (one year) to qualify for thisposition.Class Presidents – With the exception of entering freshmen, must have atleast a 2.5 cumulative grade point average as verified by the Office of Recordsand classification must be commensurate with the position when theirterm begins. Example: If a person wishes to run for Junior Class President,he or she may be a sophomore at the time of the election, but must be a juniorwhen his or her term begins. He or she must also be able to serve his or herfull term (one year) to qualify for this position.46
