In compliance with <strong>University</strong> policy, the following stipulations apply:• The manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, or useof any illegal drug or abuse of any controlled substance in theworkplace and classroom or other related areas associated withthe learning process, including residential units or other <strong>University</strong>– sponsored housing is unlawful.• Such actions are prohibited on all <strong>University</strong> property and atany other locations where employees or students are conducting<strong>University</strong> business.• The possession of any drug paraphernalia is prohibited on <strong>University</strong>property and on property sponsored by the <strong>University</strong>i.e., Residential Life community.• <strong>Student</strong>s who are in violation of this policy are subject to disciplinaryactions, such as expulsion from the <strong>University</strong>. (SeeCode Offenses in this <strong>Handbook</strong>)The use of drugs or controlled substances can cause serious health risk andmay lead to death. <strong>Student</strong>s who need or desire treatment of drug abuse mayreceive free counseling services and a referral from the <strong>Student</strong> DevelopmentCenter located in Building 19-A, Lake Campus. <strong>Student</strong>s may also seek servicesfrom <strong>University</strong> Health Services located in Building 3, Lake Campus.Class Attendance RegulationsAs indicated on Page 30 of this handbook, a student who is not present whenattendance is checked in a class is considered absent. Tardiness (1 minutelate for class and beyond) Absent (failure to show up at all or arriving in classfifteen minute after the Instructor), unless an excuse is obtained from the instructorat the end of the period. The initiative in obtaining an excuse restswith the student. Instructors who do not show up for class at a minimum, 15minutes after the designated start timeframe should be aware that studentsmay leave (depart) without penalty.Cell Phone UseCell phone use is strictly prohibited inside of an Instructor’s class duringclass time. Cell Phone is required to be in the OFF position during the entireclass timeframe. <strong>Student</strong>s are not allowed to go in and out of the classroomto receive telephone calls. No text messaging is allowed. If a student is expectingan emergency telephone call, it is the student’s responsibility to discussthis matter in advance with the Instructor, and the Instructor may allowthe student to place his or her cell phone on VIBRATE ONLY, in order toreceive the emergency call. There will be zero tolerance for using cell phonesor texting during class timeframes.Using Electronic Device (Cell Phone) to Tape An Instructor’s Lecture.<strong>Student</strong>s are required to discuss and obtain permission from the Instructor inadvance, prior to using any electronic device to record an Instructor’sLecture.81
