Ninon: Lightweight, plain-weave, sheer, open-construction<br />
fabric with high-twist filament yarns that<br />
give the fabric a crisp hand. Heavier than chiffon.<br />
Warp yarns grouped in twos. Used for curtains and<br />
evening wear.<br />
Organdy: Lightweight, plain-weave, cotton-type<br />
open-construction fabric with fine-spun yarns and<br />
a stiff finish. Used for blouses and curtains.<br />
Organza: Similar to organdy, except made of silk or<br />
manufactured filament fiber. Used for dresses and<br />
trimmings.<br />
Osnaberg: Medium- to heavyweight, coarse, durable,<br />
plain-weave, cotton-type fabric that is unfinished.<br />
Used for industrial purposes.<br />
Ottoman: Heavy, lustrous fabric with large horizontal<br />
ribs covered by the warp yarns. Similar to<br />
bengaline but heavier. Used for upholstery, draperies,<br />
and evening dresses.<br />
Oxford: Lightweight, soft, cottonlike fabric with<br />
small 2 × 1 basket weave (rib weave) repeats. Fine<br />
warp and coarse filling yarns, with smooth surface.<br />
Used for shirts.<br />
Panné velvet: Velvet fabric in which the surface<br />
pile is flattened in one direction. See velvet.<br />
Paper taffeta: Lightweight taffeta with a crisp finish.<br />
See taffeta.<br />
Peau de soie: Heavy, twill-weave, satin-effect, luxurious,<br />
soft, silklike fabric. Used for evening gowns.<br />
Percale: Lightweight, plain-weave, fine-yarn, combed<br />
cotton-type fabric. Used for sheets (up to 200 yarns<br />
per square inch), dresses, and blouses.<br />
Piqué: Medium-weight, crisp, cotton-type fabric<br />
with raised dobby design. Some patterns used<br />
are cords, waffle, and bird’s eye. Used for women’s<br />
and children’s wear, collars and cuffs, and infants’<br />
bonnets.<br />
Plissé: Lightweight, plain-weave, puckered-striped,<br />
cotton-type fabric. Slightly resembles seersucker.<br />
Used for dresses and summer pajamas.<br />
Pongee: Lightweight, plain-weave, silklike fabric with<br />
slight-slub filling yarns. Used for blouses and dresses.<br />
WOVEN FABRICS<br />

Poplin: Medium-weight, cotton-type fabric with<br />
fine horizontal ribs. Usually a solid color. Used for<br />
golf jackets and raincoats.<br />
Repp: Medium-weight, spun-yarn, coarse fabric<br />
with distinct horizontal ribs. Similar to poplin, but<br />
with more obvious ribs. Used for neckties, upholstery,<br />
and sportswear.<br />
Sailcloth: Medium- to heavyweight, plain-weave,<br />
durable, cotton-type fabric. Slightly lighter than<br />
duck. Used for jackets, shorts, and boat sails.<br />
Sateen: Medium-weight, cotton-type fabric with<br />
satin weave and semi-lustrous surface. Used for<br />
slacks, work uniforms, and shoe uppers.<br />
Satin: Medium-weight fabric of filament yarns. Satin<br />
weave has fine, closely woven warp yarns. Highly lustrous,<br />
smooth face and dull, rougher back. Used for<br />
fancy dresses. Varieties include antique satin, crepeback<br />
satin, duchess satin, and slipper satin.<br />
Scrim: Very lightweight, sheer, open-construction,<br />
plain-weave, cotton-type fabric. Similar to slightly<br />
stiff cheesecloth. Used for curtains and as support<br />
for nonwoven fabrics.<br />
Seersucker: Lightweight, cotton-type, color-striped<br />
fabric. Also with permanent, length-wise, alternating,<br />
puckered-striped and flat-striped sections. Used<br />
for dresses and sport jackets.<br />
Serge: Heavy, worsted-type, durable, solid-colored,<br />
smooth-surface fabric with twill weave. Yarns that<br />
have a higher-than-normal twist and are closely<br />
woven result in fabric becoming shiny after wear.<br />
Used for suits.<br />
Shantung: Medium-weight, plain-weave, silklike fabric<br />
with pronounced-slub filling yarns. Heavier and<br />
more textured surface than pongee. Used for dresses.<br />
Sharkskin: Medium-weight, semilustrous hardfinish,<br />
twill-weave, worsted or synthetic-type fabric.<br />
The surface resembles the skin of a shark. Used for<br />
suits and skirts.<br />
Surah: Lightweight, silklike, lustrous, fine fabric with<br />
twill weave. Frequently printed. Used for dresses and<br />
blouses.<br />
