Taffeta: Medium-weight, plain-weave, lustrous fabric,
made with filament yarns. Slight crosswise ribs.
Fabric has great rustle when rubbed. Used for dresses,
blouses, and women’s suits. Varieties include antique
taffeta, faille taffeta, moiré taffeta, paper taffeta, and
tissue taffeta.
Tapestry: Heavy, spun-yarn, ribbed fabric with colored
jacquard design resulting from different-colored
groupings of filling yarns (visible as stripes on fabric
back). Made with two sets of warp yarns and two
sets of filling yarns. Used for wall hangings, upholstery,
and handbags. With hand-woven tapestry, the
filling yarns used to produce the design only interlace
within the perimeter of the design being cut.
The yarns are left hanging fringelike on the back.
With machine-made woven tapestry, these filling
yarns weave from selvage to selvage.
Terry cloth: Medium-weight, soft, cotton-type fabric
with low-twist yarns forming surface loops. Used
and work clothes.
