The topic forthe day’s class was adult development, and theprofessor described two research studies relatedto marriage and divorce. The professor emphasizedthat both studies represented excellent researchthat had been done by leading experts inthe field. The first study involved a large sampleof married couples that had been randomly selectedfrom a well-defined population. The resultsof this study indicated that slightly more than halfof marriages end in divorce and that factors suchas persistent conflict between spouses and afamily history of divorce were reliable predictorsof divorce. The professor highlighted statisticalanalyses that confirmed the reliability of these predictors.The second study was a lengthy narrativedescription of a couple’s experiences in therapywith a marriage and family counselor. The casestudy described how the couple entered therapyseriously considering divorce, but they decidedafter a year in therapy to stay married. The professordescribed several specific techniques thetherapist used while working with the couple tohelp them understand and deal with issues suchas conflict in their marriage and a family history ofdivorce that put them at risk for divorce.The class period ended before the professorhad a chance to describe how the findings ofthese two studies were related and what conclusionsabout divorce could be drawn from them.How would you respond to the questions andconcerns your friend had after this class?1 One of your friend’s questions is how she candecide which study’s results to believe.
