CommunicationGeneral information7■ OverviewNowadays, most production machines use digital bus systems.These handle the communication between the managementlevel, the machine control and the executing organs, i. e. thesensors and actuators. These use two types of communication:Process communication and data communication.Process communicationProcess communication involves cyclically transmitting controldata and setpoints. The number of data to be transmitted is comparativelylow. A drive, for example, only requires about 4 to16 bytes. The number of connected sensors and actuators isusually specified by the configuration which makes the buscycle of process communication very constant.Data communicationData communication is not directly linked to the execution of theproduction process and is often required for engineering. Dataare sporadically (acyclically) exchanged with connected devices.The volume of this communication can be very large with> 100 bytes per device and communication task.Bus cycleThe bus cycle comprises process communication and datacommunication. The cycle of the bus system is much shorterwithout data communication. Some say: The bus cycle breathes.However, this breathing is unsuitable for highly accurate applicationsin drive technology.Cycle of a bus systemProcess communicationCommunication types of a bus systemData communicationG_PM10_EN_00130BreathingRequirements for drive controlsMost current drives have a digital closed-loop control. Thisclosed-loop control ensures that the controlled variable of thedrive, e. g. the speed or position, are achieved and maintained.Such a digital closed-loop control comprises several intertwinedcontrols (position, speed, current, ...). These must be matchedto one another, i. e. they must be synchronized. This synchronizationis important to keep the controls stable and to accuratelymaintain the controlled variable or/and to achieve it quickly. Ifsome of the components of the closed-loop control are locatedoutside the drive, a bus system must be used to manage thecommunication between these components. This bus systemmust be as synchronized as the closed-loop controls. This isreferred to as isochronous operation. For drives in the area ofMotion Control systems isochronous operation must be extremelyquick and very accurate. It ensures that the length of thebus cycle deviates only very slightly. This is then no longerreferred to as the breathing of the bus cycle (large deviations),but as jitter (small deviations). An additional bus system is often used for datacommunication. PROFIBUS and PROFINET can combine all ofthese requirements in a single bus system.
