Real-time communication for thetransmission of process data is performed on the same line.PROFINET I/O has the following real-time features:• Real-time (RT) uses the option of prioritizing the communicationstack of the stations. This permits high-performance datatransmission with standard network components.• Isochronous real-time (IRT)IRT permits strict deterministic, cyclic data transmission withshort response times and minimum jitter for high performanceMotion Control applications. This feature is implemented witha special ASIC, the so-called ERTEC (Enhanced Real TimeEthernet Controller), in the corresponding interfaces (switchintegrated into device) or network components (switch).Distributed intelligence with PROFINET CBAMachines and plants can be broken up into reusable, technologicalmodules. These modules include the mechanical andelectrical/electronic components and application programs of aplant section. In the first step, the modules are created, testedand enclosed and in the second step they are graphically wiredup with the communication system of the system. This procedurepermits efficient engineering and short commissioningtimes.Automation with PROFINETWith these and other features PROFINET fulfills all automationrequirements: Industry-compatible installation technology, realtimecapability, deterministic responses, integration of distributedfield devices, simple network administration and diagnostics,protection against unauthorized access, efficient vendor-independentengineering as well as isochronous Motion Controlapplications.PROFINET relies on switch technology and has expanded thistechnology for real-time applications (RT).
