The workshop is organised to provide participants
with an introduction to the most important
issues in percutaneous imaging-guided biopsy of
breast lesions under stereotactic and ultrasound
guidance.
Percutaneous imaging-guided needle biopsy has
increasingly become an alternative to surgical
biopsy for the histologic assessment of breast
lesions. Percutaneous biopsy is faster, less invasive
and less expensive than surgical biopsy. Tissue
acquisition is performed with automated large
core needles or directional vacuum-assisted biopsy
probes. In some instances, cytology is helpful,
but requires a strong collaboration with a trained
pathologist. Guidance for percutaneous biopsy is
usually provided by stereotaxis and ultrasound. In
the near future, MRI may play a significant role,
especially in high risk patients. Imaging guidance
depends on lesion type and the results of diagnostic
imaging studies. This workshop reviews indications,
advantages, limitations and controversial issues
in percutaneous imaging-guided biopsy of breast
lesions under stereotactic and ultrasound guidance.
Hands-on Workshops
Participants will work on phantoms to learn how to
hit a lesion or, for the more experienced, how to
improve their personal “hit rate”.
Participants will have the opportunity to attend a
series of lectures on the most important issues.
Then, during practical sessions, they will be
instructed how to perform breast biopsy under
stereotactic and ultrasound guidance. State-of-theart
equipment, including different automated large
core needles and/or directional vacuum-assisted
biopsy probes, will be available and sessions will
be arranged to allow time for each participant to
perform examinations under supervision.
Participants are required to attend the complete
workshop.
