This workshop aims to expose participants to a
developing new paradigm in interventional training
– the use of computerised medical simulators.
Training in interventional catheter-based procedures,
especially with the increasing use of non-invasive
imaging, has made it difficult for doctors to become
skilled. Patients can experience pain, and be at
increased risk during the trainee’s learning phase
for a new instrument or technique. The simulator
attempts to reproduce the physics and physiology
of the human cardiovascular system. Various
procedures – such as diagnostic angiography,
angioplasty, stenting (renals, carotids, subclavians
and peripherals) – can in theory be learnt prior to
performing on patients. What we know today is that
these simulator models can provide the participant
with an opportunity to experience, and probably
learn, the various steps of a procedure – choosing
appropriate catheters, wires, stents, and angles of
fluoroscopy rotation.
All this learning is without the use of X-rays,
exposure to blood or pain/danger to patients!

Hands-on Workshops
Learning objectives:
1. To get exposure to medical simulator machines.
2. To experience the procedure steps of catheter
based intervention on simulator machines (carotid
stenting, renal stenting, peripheral stenting).
3. By the end of the workshop the participants
should have a good understanding of medical
simulator machines and have performed the
theoretical steps for arterial stenting as it would
be in patients.
Target group:
Trainees and consultants with an interest in
learning interventional catheter-based procedures
in radiology.
Registration:
The number of participants at the workshops is
limited. Pre-registrations have been arranged
according to the order in which they were received.
Registration is possible onsite, though all seats may
be occupied by then. Please register in front of room
X, 20 minutes before the sessions begin. Please
note that an extra fee of € 30,– per participant is
charged for this workshop.
All workshops will take place in room X (2 nd level).
