Bone marrow edema: Terra incognita? (Introduction)
B. Vande Berg; Brussels/BE
Session Objectives:
1. To defi ne bone marrow edema as it appears at MR imaging.
2. To correlate MR imaging with other imaging modalities in cases of bone marrow edema.
3. To emphasise its diagnostic signifi cance in the spine and in the lower limbs.
Bone marrow edema: Defi nition and clinical signifi cance
M. Zanetti; Zurich/CH
Learning Objectives:
1. To defi ne MR characteristics of bone marrow edema and to avoid confusion with other common MR
imaging patterns.
2. To correlate these features with corresponding histopathological changes and with other imaging modalities,
including CT imaging and bone scintigraphy.
3. To stress the potential link between bone marrow edema and symptoms.
A-191 16:30
Vertebral edema: Attention please
F. Lecouvet; Brussels/BE
Learning Objectives:
1. To illustrate the multiple potential causes of vertebral "edema": Infection, infl ammation, degenerative
disorders (disc disease, intravertebral disc herniation), (micro-)trauma, tumors.
2. To highlight the semiological clues for an accurate diagnosis (location, extension, associated disorders to
look for (soft tissues, other joints).
3. To understand the role and limitations of MRI in this area, and the contribution provided by other imaging
modalities.
A-192 16:55
Lower limb skeleton edema
S.J. Eustace; Dublin/IE
Learning Objectives:
1. To illustrate patterns of lower limb skeletal edema.
2. To explain why patterns of lower limb skeletal edema vary with mechanism.
3. To indicate clinical signifi cance of differing patterns of lower limb skeletal edema.
