judge, pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and deliver<strong>in</strong>g notices or o<strong>the</strong>r documents to counsel, and organiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
court call for <strong>the</strong> Master Calendar hear<strong>in</strong>gs. When an immigrant does not speak English<br />
or Spanish, <strong>the</strong> judge typically uses a telephonic translation service. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> time that<br />
we observed hear<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> judge called <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpreter through a speaker-phone at <strong>the</strong><br />
Chicago court. The deta<strong>in</strong>ee heard <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpreter at <strong>the</strong> remote site through <strong>the</strong> same<br />
microphone that picked up <strong>the</strong> speech <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> judge and <strong>the</strong> attorneys; <strong>the</strong> deta<strong>in</strong>ee did not,<br />
<strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words, have any direct telephone connection to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpreter. 42 The judge did<br />
not advise <strong>the</strong> deta<strong>in</strong>ee that he was us<strong>in</strong>g a telephone <strong>in</strong>terpreter, and <strong>the</strong> judge did not<br />
tell <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpreter that <strong>the</strong> deta<strong>in</strong>ee was appear<strong>in</strong>g by videoconferenc<strong>in</strong>g. On rare<br />
occasions, <strong>in</strong>terpreters who spoke languages o<strong>the</strong>r than Spanish were physically present<br />
for Master Calendar hear<strong>in</strong>gs. When <strong>in</strong>-person <strong>in</strong>terpreters were used, <strong>the</strong>y appeared at<br />
<strong>the</strong> Chicago court, and not at <strong>the</strong> remote site.<br />
A television with a 27-<strong>in</strong>ch screen is set up <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tables, and cameras<br />
project an image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> immigrant onto <strong>the</strong> television. Dur<strong>in</strong>g our observation period,<br />
spectators could watch <strong>the</strong>ir deta<strong>in</strong>ed family member on ano<strong>the</strong>r television, situated <strong>in</strong><br />
front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gate separat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> attorneys and judge from <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> courtroom. 43 The<br />
judge controls <strong>the</strong> television cameras with a remote control and typically focuses on <strong>the</strong><br />
