Refer to K-Flex USA L.L.C.INSUL-TUBE ® TECHNICAL INFORMATIONUL 94(Recognition No. E300774)Made in USAContains a ProtectiveAntimicrobial AgentDESCRIPTIONINSUL-TUBE ® pipe insulation is an environmentallyfriendly, CFC-free, flexibleelastomeric thermal insulation. It is blackin color and is available in unslit tubularform in wall thicknesses of 3/8",1/2", 3/4",1”, 1-1/4”, 1-1/2" or 2” in sizes rangingfrom 3/8" I.D. to 8" IPS. (Available in sixfoot lengths and coils).INSUL-TUBE ® key physical properties areapproved through supervision by FactoryMutual Research Corporation. INSUL-TUBE ® is non-porous, fiber-free and resistsmold growth. An EPA-registered antimicrobialagent is incorporated into the productproviding additional protection againstmold, fungal and bacterial growth. INSUL-TUBE ® is GREENGUARD ® certified as a lowVOC material, meeting the requirements ofthe “Children & Schools” and “Indoor AirQuality” classifications.APPLICATIONSINSUL-TUBE ® is used to retard heat gainand prevent condensation or frost formationon refrigerant lines, cold water plumbing, and chilled water systems. It also retardsheat flow for hot water plumbing, liquidheating, dual temperature piping, and manysolar systems. INSUL-TUBE ® is designed forthe HVAC and Refrigeration industry. INSUL-TUBE ® is recommended for applicationsranging from -297°F to 220°F (-182°C to104°C). The expanded closed cell structuremakes INSUL-TUBE ® an efficientinsulator and provides effective moisturevapor resistance. INSUL-TUBE ® can beused with heat tracing/heat tapes.INSUL-TUBE ® has a tough skin that withstandstearing, rough handling, and severeenvironmental conditions, yet is flexible foreasy installation. INSUL-TUBE ® has superiorcold weather flexibility.INSTALLATIONWith a factory-applied coating of talc onthe smooth inner surface, INSUL-TUBE ®slides easily over pipe or tubing for quickinstallation. When applied to existinglines, tubing is slit lengthwise and fittedinto place. (Slitting can be done on thejob with a sharp knife or pre-slit INSUL-TUBE ® is available on request). All seamsand butt joints should be sealed with anapproved contact adhesive, making sureboth surfaces to be joined are coated withadhesive. Fittings are fabricated frommiter-cut tubular sections, and cover, flanges, etc., from INSUL-SHEET ® . K-FIT ®factory fabricated fittings are also available.ASTM C1710, Installation Guide forFlexible Closed Cell Foams, should be usedas an installation guide.OUTDOOR APPLICATIONSINSUL-TUBE ® is made from a UV-resistantelastomeric blend. For moderate UV exposure(residential applications), no additional protectivecoating is needed. For severe outdoorexposure (rooftop applications), K-FLEX ®374 Protective Coating, approved jacketingor K-FLEX Clad ® AL is recommended.UNDERGROUNDFor buried lines above the water table, usea clean fill such as sand (3"-5" layer) toprotect INSUL-TUBE ® before backfilling. Itis recommended that materials to be buriedare properly sealed at all seams and buttjoints with an approved contact adhesive. For optimum performance, the lines shouldbe encased in a conduit to protect themfrom problems associated with groundwater intrusion and compaction.RESISTANCE TO MOISTUREVAPOR FLOWThe closed cell structure and uniqueformulation of INSUL-TUBE ® effectively retardsthe flow of moisture vapor, and is considereda low transmittance vapor retarder. For most indoor applications, INSUL-TUBE ®needs no additional protection. Additionalvapor barrier protection may be necessaryfor INSUL-TUBE ® when installed on lowtemperature surfaces that are exposed tocontinuous high humidity.FLAME AND SMOKE RATINGINSUL-TUBE ® in wall thicknesses of 2" (50mm) and below has a flame spread ratingof 25 or less and a smoke developmentrating of 50 or less as tested by ASTM E84,“Surface Burning Characteristics of BuildingMaterials”. INSUL-TUBE ® is acceptablefor duct/plenum applications, meeting therequirements of NFPA 90A/B.Numerical flammability ratings alone may not definethe performance of products under actual fire conditions. They are provided only for use in the selection ofproducts to meet limits specified when compared to aknown standard.PAGE 24
