If present, the FormatStringentry specifies whether a data item is all-numeric or alphanumeric (i.e., may containcharacters other than the decimal digits), and specifies either a fixed length or a variablelength. If no FormatString entry is present, then the default data characteristic isalphanumeric. If no FormatString entry is present, or if the entry does not specify alength, then any length >=1 is permitted.
