Attribute Bits may be used to determinewhether the physical object to which a tag is affixed requires special handling of anykind.Attribute bits are available for all EPC types. The same definitions of attribute bits asspecified below apply regardless of which EPC scheme is used.It is essential to understand that attribute bits are additional “control information” that isnot part of the Electronic Product Code. Attribute bits do not contribute to the uniqueidentity of the EPC. For example, it is not permissible to attach two RFID tags to twodifferent physical objects where both tags contain the same EPC, even if the attribute bitsare different on the two tags.Because attribute bits are not part of the EPC, they are not included when the EPC isrepresented as a pure identity URI, nor should the attribute bits be considered as part ofthe EPC by business applications. Capturing applications may, however, read theattribute bits and pass them upwards to business applications in some data field other thanthe EPC. It should be recognized, however, that the purpose of the attribute bits is toassist in the data capture and physical handling process, and in most cases the attributebits will be of limited or no value to business applications. The attribute bits are notintended to provide a reliable master data or product descriptive attributes for businessapplications to use.The currently assigned attribute bits are as specified below:Bit Address18 h [unassigned]19 h [unassigned]1A h1B h1C h1D h1E hAssigned as of TDSVersion[unassigned][unassigned][unassigned][unassigned][unassigned]Meaning1F h 1.5 A “1” bit indicates the tag isaffixed to hazardousmaterial. A “0” bit providesno such indication.Table 13. Attribute Bit AssignmentsCopyright ©2005- 2011 GS1 AISBL, All Rights Reserved. Page 65 of 218
