psychological and physical safety, health and well being of each child to the more<br />

complex standard involving the ability to reflect on one’s own knowledge, attitudes and<br />

skills, and take appropriate action. In this final standard, the required skills include the<br />

ability to:<br />

a) describe how their interactions with children are developmentally-appropriate<br />

and respectful of the children’s culture;<br />

b) describe how their interactions with families convey respect for different<br />

cultures, values and child-rearing practices;<br />

c) describe how the environments and experiences they provide for children are<br />

consistent with developmentally-appropriate, inclusive practice which is<br />

respectful of the children’s culture, and how they promote children’s<br />

development;<br />

d) identify their areas of strength and areas where they need to obtain additional<br />

knowledge or skills or changes their approach;<br />

e) use feedback provided by others to reflect upon their knowledge, skills and<br />

attitudes and to clarify their values and biases; and<br />

f) identify and use relevant sources of information and professional development<br />

to continuously enhance their work and to obtain additional knowledge or<br />

skills. (Doherty, 2003b)<br />

The required core knowledge needed in order to meet this standard includes knowing:<br />

1. that one’s own experience, family, culture, and religion shape child-rearing<br />

beliefs and values;
