Brennan Paving & Construction
Viva Next D1 Project
Brennan’s contract with Kiewit Ellis-Don (KED),
a 3.0 km long Design-Build “Viva Next” Bus
Rapid Transit expansion project ‘D1’ in Newmarket
continued into its third year in 2014
with construction along Davis Drive from
Yonge Street easterly past the Southlake Regional
Health Centre (Hospital) to Roxborough
Road and Patterson Street. This rapid transportation
network involves the widening of Davis
Drive and the construction of a dedicated
center-lane Bus Rapidway. The project also
includes the construction of six semi-enclosed
stations at various locations throughout the
Rapidway including the installation of intelligent
transportation systems. Additionally, the construction of 3 culvert extensions, installation of a new box culvert crossing Davis
Drive, reconstructing the underground infrastructure (water/sanitary/storm), 18 retaining walls, and the widening and replacement
of Keith Bridge are required. The project kicked off in 2011 with D1 Early Works construction helping to facilitate the required
utility re-locations, and was completed in November of 2011. The civil portion of the D1 Project is valued at $54.2M.
The location of the Viva Next project poses many interesting construction challenges due to the limited space for traffic and pedestrian
diversion along the busy Davis Drive corridor. Traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction with a centre median
lane to facilitate left turns.
A new bridge structure crossing the Holland River was completed this year, the Keith Bridge. This multi-span structure with decorative
parapets complete with a new pedestrian trail running beside the river is a very attractive landmark for users of the Tom Taylor
trial. Challenges faced for the bridge work were, among others, minimal construction work zone area and very poor, contaminated
soils which made access and construction very difficult.
In 2014, Brennan successfully completed approximately
80 % of the roadway widening and infrastructure
while new boulevard construction is following
along. All of these accomplishments utilized many
of Miller Group’s own products such as aggregates,
asphalt, and concrete as well as engaging various
Miller/Brennan business units such as our Transit
Division, Structures Division, the Miller Paving team,
Miller asphalt and concrete plants as well as our
Quality Control Division.
2014 ended with the Miller/Brennan team proving
that with dedication, hard work, and unsurpassed
teamwork, each challenge can be successfully
overcome. With our skills and expertise, projects are
completed with the upmost safety, efficiency and
competence while remaining budget conscious. 2015
will move on with continued roadway widening,
VIVA D1 artist rendering of Davis Drive and Main St in Newmarket
underground infrastructure work and paving.
In 2015, Davis Drive will see more drastic changes as the widenings unveil themselves and the new boulevards take shape. The
flagship project on H3 (Hwy 7 from Bayview to Warden) has resulted in many well received impressions which will be translated up
to the Newmarket Davis Drive D1 project.
The Miller/Brennan team looks forward to the year ahead and bringing the D1 project closer to a successful finish forecasted for
December 2015.
Brennan Paving & Construction
MTO 2014-2013 (403 Structures at Mavis Rd/Eastgate/Cawthra Rd)
In July of 2014 Brennan Paving & Construction Ltd. was awarded a $7,865,000.00 project by the Ministry of Transportation to
rehabilitate three major structures on Highway 403 within the City of Mississauga - Cawthra Rd, Eastgate Parkway Extension, and
Mavis Rd. underpasses. The project entails rehabilitation of the three structures with new concrete deck overlays, reconstruction
of the substructures, replacement of the structures bearings and expansion joints, and removal and reconstruction of the barrier
walls - all to be completed in staged traffic configuration adjacent to live traffic. Brennan, with its customary auspiciousness, commenced
the work dedicating a skillful team to each structure.
The classical nature of construction soon emerged and difficulties in assorted magnitudes presented themselves; but the challenges
never put Brennan at unease. Numerous pre-existing conditions and unforeseen circumstances introduced setbacks and
gave way to amendments to the scope of work. Brennan duly adjusted resources to suit. In every step of the work, Brennan has
maintained a well-balanced relationship with the Client. Questions were asked, solutions were put forward, and alongside the
Ministry resolutions were accomplished.
Once again, Brennan had the opportunity to successfully self-perform all jacking operations on all three structures.
This two year project will be completed in the fall of 2015, with the first phase of the work at each structure to be completed in
2014. Brennan is committed to excelling at every project and exceeding every client’s satisfaction. While the 2015 construction
season will start with a new stage of work at each structure, Brennan will uphold the same positive and capable performance to
kick off and conclude the Project.
VIVA NEXT (H2) PROJECT
The Viva Next H2 project involves the design
and construction of a Bus Rapid Transit
way (BRT) along Highway 7 in Vaughan.
Limits of the job are from Highway 400 to
the GO Bradford railway bridge (approximately
1.0km east of Keele Street). The
road will be widened in stages to allow for
the creation of two rapid transit bus lanes
down the centre of Highway 7 as well as
four centre platforms and the construction
of the signature Vaughan Metropolitan
Centre (VMC) station to link the new TTC
Millway subway station. There will also
be a widening of the overpass structure
crossing the CN McMillan Yard.
This is the third time Brennan is the
preferred civil sub-contractor with the Design-Build Project team of Keiwit/Ellis-Don and are working together to successfully
complete this major transformation in Vaughan. The approximate contract value for Brennan is $61.2M.
Construction began in the Fall of 2013 with minor works and traffic staging. The CN bridge widening continues under many tight
restrictions and clearances. The design of the bridge had to be changed to accommodate a tighter CN clearance envelope and
new precast box girders were introduced in lieu of standard CPCI girders. The structure widening is expected to be completed by
June 2015 and is currently on schedule. This structure crosses over 14 live tracks which run 24 hours per day and 7 days per week.
The biggest challenge working around the tracks is work times which have been limited to 4 to 6 hours per day. However, when
the Yard requires the track, work times are eliminated or cancelled. CN has been excellent to work with and the professionalism of
our site personnel has made this challenge a little easier to overcome.
Storm sewer and roadway widening began in the Spring of 2014 with new boulevard construction following up right behind.
Target dates for different operations have been achieved and the project is currently running right on schedule. Some winter work
operations are currently being planned to help move the project along in order to push for a Summer 2016 completion.
