DRIVEN TO BE THE BEST
Miller Northern Operations
Miller Northwest – Dryden, Ontario
After enduring record breaking cold temperatures throughout an extended winter, the Miller Northwest construction crew had
another very successful season. Various projects that were completed included working with the Keewatin Patricia District School
Board, Loblaw Properties West Inc., City of Dryden, the Ministry of Transportation, as well as several residential home owners and
bridge building contractors. In order to complete the various time sensitive projects as per schedule, the crews worked diligently
throughout the summer season.
Keewatin Patricia District School Board
Keewatin Patricia District School Board partnered with Dryden Harry McMaster
Athletics to construct a state-of-the-art athletics track and parking area at Dryden
High School, complete with an outdoor basketball court. Installing a national class,
rubber surface athletics track requires incredible attention to detail and quality
drainage, base, and asphalt installation. A certified 400m track needs to be entirely
flat in the direction of running, with an exact and unwavering 0.5% cross fall across
the lanes. It can have no detectable seams and no deviations greater than 3mm
over any 3 meter span.
Although Miller Northwest had never installed a track, they knew exactly what was
required and how to deliver it. Working with the Keewatin Patricia District School
Board and Moncrief Construction, the project involved placement of Superpave 12.5 pavement in two lifts to provide the base for
the new rubberized coated track surface. The grade and paving crew were credited with constructing the smoothest surface that
was coated this season, adhering to very strict tolerances, making the Dryden High School Track a one-of-a-kind facility within
a 500km radius. “PlayTeck spent about an hour circling the entire track, shaking their heads at the beautiful work at which point
they declared that it was the single best asphalt installation they had ever seen in more than 10 years of installations….better
than the world class tracks they have installed throughout the country”. Other site work included the placement and compaction
of granular material and pavement to provide the students and teachers with an outdoor basketball court and adequate parking.
Miller Paving – North Bay, Ontario
2014 was a challenging year for MPL North Bay but by putting emphasis on achieving our
goals, we were able to work effectively and safely.
Surface Treatment
Surface Treatment was performed on various secondary highways from Mattawa/
Temiskaming to Port Loring to Sudbury and north to Cartier. This project involved pulverizing,
placing Granular A from various sources and double and single surface treatment.
The project required a significant contribution from the Aurora office with their Pulverizing
and Surface Treatment crews.
Miller Northern Operations
Highway Resurfacing Contracts
Throughout the year we were successful in establishing
resurfacing contracts with the Ministry of Transportation and
area maintenance contractors. This work included Superpave
12.5 on Highways 575, 64, 65, 535, 654, 17 and 11.
Aggregate Sales
This season we had several pits and quarries in operation
simultaneously and with the dedication of staff we had
significant sales out of our Nipissing Quarry, Birchs Quarry,
Allstone Quarry and Bonfield Pit. Sales to Hydro One, Aecon
and Pioneer top the list.
MTO 2014-6008 Highway 594/601
Work began on this 9.5km dual highway contract immediately after the August long weekend in 2014.
Work associated with this contract included earth excavation, Superpave 12.5 paving, placement of granular
A, placement of granular B, In Place Processing, as well as the installation of new pipe culverts. While
completing this job, the crews had to ensure uninterrupted and safe passage to the municipal airport, MNR
firebase, air ambulance base, as well as the active haul routes for the Northwestern Ontario lumber industry.
Miller Northwest crews worked hard to complete operations in advance of the rapidly approaching winter
season.
MTO Contract 2014-6005 Hwy
17 Dyment, Ontario
Miller Northwest turned a late tender and
tender award into a success while working on
contract 2014-6005, near Dyment, Ontario. This
contract required milling of the existing surface
and pulverizing of all shoulders. These tasks
were accomplished by Miller integration with
Bill Hamilton’s team out of Miller Aurora, superpave
12.5 at 50mm thickness was performed by
Brian Emon’s crew from Miller Northwest and
supplied by Miller Northwest’s Portable Cedar
Rapids plant operated by Terry Ernewein and
his team. The Earth works was performed by B. J. Halow and Son Constructors and guide rail installations was supplied by Wilco
Contractors Superior Inc. Line painting was supplied by Al Gibson’s team from Thunder Bay Highway Maintenance. Teamwork
and skilled employees made it possible to complete this project before winter took hold on the region. Good job everyone!!
Emergency Work
With the extreme weather this past
season we responded to multiple
emergencies throughout the northeast
region. We dispatched crews
to repair washouts for the Ministry
of Transportation, townships and
municipalities. The quick response and
quality of work by crews allowed us to
establish new relationships throughout
the central region.
