DRIVEN TO BE THE BEST
Eastern Ontario Operations
Smiths Construction –Arnprior
Greetings from the Ottawa Valley and best wishes for success in 2015 to all of our sister companies. It was another busy summer
and fall with the grade and paving crews getting an earlier than normal start the first week of May and working straight through
until mid-November.
Southwestern Ontario Operations
Miller Aggregates Southwest - Windsor
A strong team is now in place and was needed to handle the increased volumes sold this season.
Smiths hopes to continue to build on the successes we had in 2014, and we offer some of those highlights for your interest:
• The newly refurbished batch plant from Norway Asphalt completed its first season at its new location at Turcottes pit and
produced HMA securing our market share along the Hwy 17, 41, 132 and Hwy 60 corridors.
• Newly formed pipe crew.
• The Kluke pit lease agreement was renewed for another 3 years securing a quality source of riverstone and asphalt sand.
• Riverstone sales have continued to increase over the last 5 years.
Major Contracts:
MTO Hwy 417 Arnprior is a 3 year sub-contract for paving and aggregate
supply and we were able to negotiate several contracts for our sister companies
for the milling, tack coat, granular sealing, pulverizing and Cold-In-
Place recycling The majority of aggregates have already been supplied
with the remainder of the work to be completed in 2015-2016.
MTO Hwy 17 Pembroke is a 3 year contract for CIREAM, paving and 3
bridge rehabilitations projects. The contract is on schedule and the majority
of the CIREAM and paving was completed in 2014.
MTO Hwy 41 Pembroke to Eganville is a 2 year contract for Cold-In-Place
recycling, and over 50 culvert replacements necessitating the newly
formed pipe crew. 95% of the culverts have already been replaced on
time and ahead of budget. Cold-In-Place recycling and paving will take
place in 2015.
Hwy 401 Brockville WBL is a shave and pave contract requiring HMA which was produced from our CMI 400 portable plant. The
16 ships in total were received and many tonnes
sold or passed through the dock in the 2014 season.
Co-ordinating the offloading of aggregate along
with ship fueling and oil/fuel deliveries to Sterling’s
dock is a constant challenge. Thank you to all those
involved at Sterling Fuels for their continued co-operation
in making this a successful team effort.
contract was completed on time and on budget.
CFB Petawawa utilities and road reconstruction is a 2 year sub-contract for paving in the fall of 2014 and another 14,000 tonnes in
2015.
Volume through the dock increased again over the
previous season with Mill-Am and Huron Construction
continuing to be the core customers supported
by this business. A deal was made with Lafarge
again this year to import, load and weigh their
product to their customers through our dock to
help service the aggregate demands of the Rt. Hon.
Herb Gray Parkway. This accounted for a little less
than half of the volume through the dock in 2014
and was a good deal for both companies.
All is well in Windsor!
