DRIVEN TO BE THE BEST
Southwestern Ontario Operations
Huron Construction - Chatham
Huron was successful in bidder for the Chatham-Kent rural paving contract. This crew kept operations rolling as they continued on
with this project and placed hot mix. As they continued on, the gravel crew was not far behind and readily shouldered these roads
placing granular. This contract was a slight increase in tonnages over the past few years.
When the roadways were near completion in Chatham-Kent the crews continued on into Enniskillen Township placing asphalt on
various roads.
The crew was kept busy with miscellaneous repairs for Carillion on the 401 corridor in the Rodney to Tilbury area over a one
month span. Carillion had the paving crew hopping from job site to job site. Hot mix was laid in various sections of highway in the
Chatham-Kent, Essex area. The biggest area was a contract on Hwy 77 near Comber.
Customer sales at Huron’s asphalt plant continue to grow as more and more private companies look into buying their hot mix here
at the Huron yard.
Our largest contract was for Harwich Raleigh Public School surfacing on parking and driving areas.
Southwestern Ontario Operations
Mill-Am - Windsor
The 2014 season started early with an A.C. tank being added in February
so that the asphalt plant could begin producing for the year in early March.
The addition of a third A.C. tank allows for the inventory of all three A.C.
types that are required daily on the Right Honorable Herb Gray Parkway
project. The work and schedule on the Parkway project was very challenging
again this season.
The project was scheduled to be completed in 2014, however due to
many issues including the replacement of a number of bridge girders, the
project fell behind schedule. In order to regain lost time a lot of pressure
was applied to the asphalt schedule. This meant crews working nights and
through weekends regularly. One crew has been dedicated to this project
almost the entire season and we are prepared to work through the winter
months again.
Huron was low bidder for Contract MTO 2014-3001 Hwy 40 job from Chatham to Wallaceburg. This 20km stretch of road included
asphalt and gravel to be laid.
The gravel division of Huron Construction was once again kept busy with supply and demand. This division saw an increase in
cash sales, Granular M sales to Chatham-Kent roads division, and tonnes to C-K shouldering. RAP crushing continues to be a large
part of the gravel operations.
Sales and production in the Komoka branch of Huron were steady. There were increased sales of material to the end of September.
Outside of this project our second crew has worked
to maintain our usual market share with municipal
and private customers. We were awarded several
large municipal projects; three City of Windsor
tenders with HMA, a large County of Essex project
including HMA and milling and paving lanes of the
Ambassador Bridge to name a few.
Tyler smith was hired at the beginning of the season
and has been a strong addition to the Mill-Am team.
Tyler’s duties this year are mostly Parkway related,
such as keeping track of quantities for payment, both
in the office and out in the field using the GPS rover.
An interesting occurrence this season and one that
we are proud of was winning a contract by coin flip
at the Windsor City Hall. Mill-Am is now 1 - 0 in coin
flips over our competition. Tails it was!
As the 2014 season was the most challenging yet,
we at Mill-Am would like to thank the group for their
continued support.
All is well in Windsor!
