Miller Compost, Ontario & Nova Scotia
Miller Compost continues to create high quality compost, soil mixtures,
and mulch products while diverting over 1.5 million tonnes of material
from landfill to date. It is exciting to look ahead to continued growth and
employing new technologies but we would be remiss if we did not look
back to appreciate the dedication and efforts that our fellow colleagues
invested years ago to allow us the opportunities we have today.
Tom Hennessey was instrumental in getting Miller started in the compost
business in the early 90s and played a key role in the establishment
of Miller’s Bloomington and Halifax Composting Facilities. In September
2014 The Compost Council of Canada awarded Tom the Compost
Industry Pioneer Award recognizing Tom’s lifetime commitment to The
Compost Council of Canada and his tireless efforts towards assisting the
compost industry. While we all would have preferred for Tom to have
been with us to accept the award it was heartwarming to see the industry
acknowledge his tremendous contributions.
One of Tom’s role as the Compost Council of Canada’s National Chair was to present the award to the winner of the National Giant
Compost Growing Contest - it is fitting that this year, for the first time ever, Miller’s Pickering Compost team were crowned national
champs.
The great team at Miller Compost will continue to work hard to honour the foundation laid by Tom’s efforts. We are underway with
upgrades and expansion to most of our composting facilities next year and will continue to grow our presence with respect to anaerobic
digestion. Miller Compost will continue to lead the industry in sustainable organics diversion as Tom would have wanted
us to do.
The Future Looks Bright Out East
Customer service has been the underpinning of the growth on the East Coast and it paid some serious dividends in 2014. Given
Miller’s track record, we were awarded an RFP to collect all waste streams within the Province of Nova Scotia for Nova Scotia Power
– a massive contract. In addition to the waste stream, it has allowed
us to enter into a new market, that of scrap steel which will see the
Miller colours stretch from Yarmouth to the tip of Cape Breton. The
innovative bid, coupled with positive reference from our existing
customers secured the contract, and to date, Nova Scotia Power has
proven to be a wonderful partner that we hope will be the start of a
long relationship.
Continuing on this positive growth trend, Miller also secured the
housing authority contract which was awarded on June 24th and
saw us roll out in excess of 90 front-end cans (and 250 toters) by
July 2, 2014. This short turn-around cemented the housings decision
that Miller was more than capable of servicing their needs and
illuminated the extraordinary lengths are staff went too, to ensure
all of the housing’s tenants didn’t go without waste services over the
long weekend. A special thanks to Rick Jackson, Ken Hurshman and
the countless other team members that made this impossible feat
possible.
Moreover to focus on what lays on the horizon, 2015 is shaping up
to be an even busier year. Late in 2014 staff submitted a large RFP
residential collection contract for HRM. We hope to have the results
in mid-February so watch for the internal announcements celebrating
the successful award! HRM is also looking at expanding their
organic and recycling programs; we’ve got some exiting announcements
slated for 2015 that will position Miller’s future firmly on the
east coast for years to come.
Northern Ontario District
The Northern Ontario District had several
noteworthy events in 2014. A couple of highlights
include our contribution to the City of
North Bay food drive in May during which
Miller Waste volunteers collected 2,800 kgs of
non-perishable food items for needy families.
City staff and Council and the local Food Bank
were very appreciative. Photo right shows the
group at the food drive.
Darrell McLeod and Dale Carmichael made it to the provincial rodeo with Darrell placing 3rd in roll off making it to the Ontario
final.
Back Row – Michael Dillon, Joe Dewolfe, Al Graham, Aaron Wolfe, Will Graham, Todd Savory, Kyle Schumacher.
Front row – Carl Johnston (Temp worker), Pumpkin, Harold McLean
In our Owen Sound operation we completed
a complete facelift of the recycle plant. This
facility is owned by Miller Waste and under a
15 year contract with the City of Owen Sound.
It processes 8,000 MT per year of blue box recyclables.
We also recently were awarded the
Town of South Bruce residential waste collection
contract (4 year contract). Miller was not
the low bidder however the town acknowledged
to us that it did not want to lose the
Miller level of service!
